Situational Picture of Innovation 2017
Tampere Region shows the way towards a new innovation vision
According to an assessment made by the OECD this year, Finnish innovation policy is at the crossroads. Public RDI investments in Finland have been declining for years and the long recession and structural change of the industry have also led to cuts in private investments. Tampere Region’s joint work on the Situational Picture in recent years has recognized this, and solutions for these issues have been sought with a pioneering approach.
As a counter-measure to changes in the scale and financing structure of innovation activities, higher education institutes have fine-tuned their profiles, focused their attention on the Academy of Finland and the EU and improved their success records in their financing application processes. Tampere Region has also seen the competence released from the Nokia cluster materialize into new enterprises which have formed the basis of the ecosystem of Tampere-based start-ups.
For years, Tampere Region has been implementing and managing the most interesting partnerships on a national level, such as the strategic Dimecc projects, alliance-type construction projects, joint Demola projects of students and enterprises and in the innovative procurements of the municipalities.
The innovation policy choices made in the Tampere Region have been modern and in accordance with recommendations issued later on. We have excellent preconditions to create and implement the new innovation vision of Finland.
